Concept
Before you even try to make a CMV you need to have an idea for one. This is called a concept.
Concepts come to us in many ways. For example: You're driving in your car and hear a fave song on the radio and then images of a toon you love pops into your head. WALLAH! You are all set to get started.....well, maybe not.
First you need to ask yourself if the song truly fits the show or characters you wanna use. For example: Just because a song is romantic doesn't mean it automatically works with Danny and Sam (From Danny Phantom). Do the lyrics sound like them? Does the song fit the type of people they are (IE: If someone is shy, then a hard rock romance song from their point of view probably isn't the best idea).
You also want to check to see if the song you want to use may be overdone to your concept. I've lost track of how many Danny and Sam vids I've seen to "Accidentally in Love" by The Counting Crows. It's not that the idea is bad. In fact, when done well, it's a perfect match....but that doesn't mean it should be done fifty times O_O. When I'm researching youtube or animemusicvideos.org to see if an idea for an anime music video(AMV) I wanna make has been done to death I try to find a really good one. If I find one that does the song/anime/character combination justice I'll find a different concept to work on. If it doesn't, then I may make the video anyway. If you do this, however, you need to be certain you can make the vid look better than the best one you've found, otherwise you're just adding to the pigpile. Lol.
Naming your video is also an important part of this process. A LOT (And I'm talkin' nearly 85%) of CMV editors just use the title of the song as the title of their vid. While this is not necessarily bad per sey, it is extremely uncreative. Try to come up with a title that really covers the main concept of your vid. And if coming up with an original title is difficult for you try using a phrase from the song that doesn't include the title. Not only is it more creative, but it also helps your vid stand out. ^_^\/
